#1 "A Rose For Lotta" Pilot episode: Lotta Crabtree is hired by mining tycoon Alpheus Troy to lure one of the Cartwrights into town and hold him for ransom in exchange for Ponderosa timber rights. Guest Stars: Yvonne DeCarlo

#2 "Death On Sun Mountain" Ben discovers Mark Burdette and Early Thorne selling antelope meat to the miners at high prices. He offers the miners beef at a more reasonable price. #3 "The Newcomers" Ben discovers hydraulic miners camped on the ranch and has Hoss escort them off. In the process, Hoss falls in love with the sister of one of the men, not realizing she is terminally ill. Guest Stars: Inger Stevens

#5 "Enter Mark Twain" Virginia City is visited by Samuel Clemens who writes editorials for the Territorial Enterprise. One of his first subjects is a politician who is trying to steal the Ponderosa. Guest Stars: Howard Duff and Dorothy Green

#6 "The Julia Bulette Story" Little Joe falls in love with Julia Bulette, a saloon owner. Her reputation and the fact that she is much older than Joe, puts him at odds with his father. Guest Stars: Jane Greer

#7 "The Saga Of Annie O'Toole" Annie O'Toole comes to Washoe Digging with a claim to a mine filed by her beau Swede Lundberg. Swede had two claims and sold one to an old acquaintance named Gregory Spain. There is some confusion over which claim is Annie's. A decision must be made in Miners Court. Ben Cartwright presides. #10 "The Magnificent Adah" Actress Adah Issacs Mencken visits Virginia City and is followed by old boyfriend John Regan. Adah is an old friend of Ben's and he stays close by to try to offer her protection. Ben's sons are convinced she's bad news and try dissuade their father from seeing her. Guest Stars: Ruth Roman

#11 "The Truckee Strip" The Cartwrights are embroiled in a feud with their neighbors the Bishops. Joe and Amy Bishop want no part of the feud and wish to get married. Guest Stars: James Coburn

#14 "The Sisters" Adam is courting Sue Ellen Terry, a woman well known by the men folk in Virginia City. He dismisses his father's concerns and continues the relationship. When Sue Ellen is killed, Adam becomes the number one suspect. Guest Stars: Fay Spain and Buddy Ebsen

#15 "The Last Hunt" An Indian woman is brought home by Joe and Hoss after they discover her alone and about to have a baby. The Shoshone Chief, her father, and the baby's father (a white man) search for her. Guest Stars: China Eden and Steven Terrell

#16 "El Toro Grande" Hoss and Joe travel to Monterey carrying a large amount of cash for the purchase of a prize bull. Along the way they have to deal with bandits, a duel, a boy who runs away with the bull, a love struck young woman who stows away in the Cartwrights wagon and hungry Indians. #19 "The Gunmen" While in Texas, Joe and Hoss are mistaken for the Slade brothers who are involved in a feud between two families. Consequently, Joe and Hoss are thrown in jail and are rescued by one of the members of the feuding familes. Joe and Hoss turn to the women of the feuding families to help stop the fighting. #20 "The Fear Merchants" Bigot Andrew Fulmer is running for mayor. Fulmer's hatred of Chinese people presents a problem for Jimmy Chong; he is falsely accused of shooting Sally Ridley. Guest Stars: Gene Evans

#21 "The Spanish Grant" Rosita Morales pretends to be heiress Isabella Marie Inez de la Cuesta in order to get a land grant which includes part of the Ponderosa. She is unable to fool Ben. With the help of his sons, he tries to find the real heiress. Guest Stars: Patricia Medina, Sebastian Cabot

#22 "Blood On The Land" A sheepherder, who was originally just passing through the Ponderosa, decides to stay there permanently. Ben attempts to kick him off the land and the sheepherder takes Adam prisoner in order to get ownership of the land. Guest Stars: Everett Sloane

#23 "Desert Justice" Ben's ranch hand, Dave Walker, has been accused of killing the wife of Marshall Dowd. The Cartwrights go to Los Angeles for his trial. Guest Stars: Claude Akins, Wesley Lau

#24 "The Stranger" Ben, who is running for Governor of Nebraska, was accused of murder twenty years ago. He goes to New Orleans to face the charges. Guest Stars: Lloyd Nolan

#29 "Bitter Water" When miner Lem Keith plans to buy land next to the Ponderosa, he goes to the owner's son Todd to help him. Todd is more than willing to help Lem because he is in love with Lem's daughter and because he and Todd share a common hatred of the Cartwrights. Lem plants a tick infestation in the Cartwrights' cattle herd. Guest Stars: Don Dubbins, Merry Anders

#30 "Feet Of Clay" Little Billy Allen's mother has died and he waits for his father at the Cartwrights'. Unbeknownst to Billy, his father is a prisoner who has broken out of jail. When the father commits robbery and murder Hoss is forced to kill him. Guest Stars: Logan Field, David Ladd

#31 "Dark Star" A gypsy girl named Tirza has come to stay at the Ponderosa. She has been disowned by her people because they believe she is a witch. While staying with the Cartwrights, Joe falls in love with her and tries to prove her people wrong. Guest Stars: Hugo Hass, Susan Harrison

#32 "Death At Dawn" A member of a powerful gang murders a shopkeeper. The killer is sentenced to be hanged and the leader of the gang kidnaps Ben and holds him hostage. Guest Stars: Nancy Deale

#33 "Showdown" Sam Kriby, a young bank robber, gets a job with the Cartwrights in an attempt to prevent the Sheriff from learning the whereabouts of his accomplices-- the feared Pardo gang. Guest Stars: Ben Cooper

#34 "The Mission" Captain Pender is looking for a scout and Hoss suggests former scout Charlie Trent. Because Charlie feels responsible for a massacre, he spends most of his time in the bottle. Guest Stars: Henry Hull and Harry Carey Jr.

#35 "Badge Without Honor" Gerald Eskith comes to town claiming to be a Deputy Marshall. He wants to take the Cartwrights’ friend Jason Blaine to San Francisco to testify against the Murdock gang. #36 "The Mill" Tom Edwards is in a wheelchair and holds Ben Cartwright responsible for his condition. Tom turns to drink and the Cartwrights decide to help him find purpose again. Guest Stars: Claude Akins and Harry Townes

#37 "The Hopefulls" Jacob Darien is leading his family of Quakers through Virginia CIty. When he is accosted by town roughnecks, Adam Cartwright steps in with the help of his new traveling companion, Sam Bord. #38 "Denver McKee" While celebrating the return of his daughter Connie, former lawman McKee is asked to assist in the capture of an outlaw gang. While Joe is courting Connie, no one realizes that McKee is involved with the outlaws. Guest Stars: Franchot Tone and Natalie Trundy

#39 "Day Of Reckoning" Ben's life is saved by Matsou, an outcast Indian and his wife. In gratitude, Ben gives Matsou some land and a new start in life, much to the horror of neighbor Ike Dagget who hates Indians. When his wife is killed in a nighttime raid, Dagget blames Matsou and kills his wife. Guest Stars: Ricardo Montalban

#40 "The Abduction" Little Joe Cartwright and his big brother Hoss spend an unforgettable and almost tragic evening at the carnival when Little Joe's date, pretty Jennifer Beale disappears. The carnival is owned by handsome Phil Reed, who has an eye for pretty young girls. Jennifer, daughter of a wealthy miner, is intrigued by Reed, whose weakness for a pretty face this time proves costly to him. Guest Stars: Gerald Mohr and Jackie Russell

#44 "The Savage" On his way to Nevada City, Adam comes across a woman being threatened by Shoshone who've just discovered she isn't the spirit woman they thought she was. In his effort to protect her, Adam is shot in the leg with an arrow and must rely on White Buffalo women to help him. Guest Stars: Anna Lisa, Hal Jon Norman

#45 "Silent Thunder" During his travels, Joe meets a deaf and mute girl named Ann. Joes decides he can teach her sign language, but her father is skeptical and suspects Joe has other motives. Ann falls in love with Joe. Guest Stars: Stella Stevens and Albert Salmi

#48 "The Courtship" Joe and Hoss travel to Sacramento to visit the widow of Ben's friend Josh Layton. Hoss falls in love with Helen Layton and brings her home, intending to marry her. All are thrilled about the news except Adam, who has reason to believe she is using Hoss. Guest Stars: Julie Adams

#49 "The Spitfire" Joe finds a stranger burning Ponderosa land and must shoot him in self defense. He finds himself left with the responsibility of the man's daughter and brings her home to the Ponderosa. Joe is unaware that her unlawful kin are searching for her. #50 "The Bride" Ben is away on business and a woman comes to the Ponderosa claiming to be his new wife. When Ben returns she says he is not the man she married. The man claimed to be Ben Cartwright was a different man. She tells the Cartwright's she gave this man all her money. The Cartwrights travel to Crater Plains to find him, unaware they are heading into a trap set by the young lady. Guest Stars: Adam West and Suzanne Lloyd

#51 "Bank Run" When Ben and Adam have to leave on business, Ben puts Joe in charge. His first order of business is to rob the Virginia City Bank. Hoss becomes an unwilling accomplice. Guest Stars: Walter Burke and Ian Wolfe

#52 "The Fugitive" When the son of former Ponderosa ranch foreman Will Reagan is killed in Mexico, Adam goes down to Plata to investigate. Guest Stars: Frank Silvera

#53 "Vengeance" Hoss accidentally kills Willie Twilight in self-defense and is consumed with guilt. Willie's brother Red comes to avenge his brother's death and shoots Hoss in the back. While his brother lies dying, Joes makes Hoss a promise that he will kill Twilight. Guest Stars: Adam Williams and Beverly Tyler

#54 "Tax Collector" Hated tax collector Jock Henry, is expecting a new baby and a new foal. When both must be delivered at the same time, Hoss comes to the rescue. Guest Stars: Eddie Firestone and Kathie Browne

#55 "The Rescue" The boys declare that their father needs to start taking it easier and they go in search of cattle rustlers. The boys soon find themselves in a bind with no hope of rescue. Guest Stars: Leif Erickson and Richard Coogan

#56 "The Dark Gate" Adam is puzzled by his longtime friend's bizarre behavior, but is powerless to help him. When Ross becomes physically violent with his wife, Adam removes her from the home. #61 "The Infernal Machine" Hoss tries to assist Daniel Pettibone in getting financial backing for his 'horseless carriage'. When a stranger comes along and invests a large sum, it inspires others to follow suit. The stranger runs off with the cash and the citizens blame Pettibone. #62 "The Thunderhead Swindle" While trying to deal with cattle rustlers, Ben learns of a strike at the Thunderhead Mine. Suspecting foul play, he decides to investigate new owners Furnas and Cunningham. Guest Stars: Parley Baer and Bitto Scotti

#63 "The Secret" Mary Parson is murdered and her family says she was on her way to meet little Joe. When a credible witness says he saw them together the day of the murder, Joe is arrested. Guest Stars: Russel Collins and Morgan Woodward

#64 "The Dream Riders" Major John Cayley, and old friend of Ben's, comes to the Ponderosa to carry out an experiment with his hot air balloon. Ben is unaware that Cayley and his men are planning to rob the bank and use the balloon to escape. Cayley's plans are complicated by the arrival of his daughter. #65 "Elizabeth, My Love" Adam is battling a high fever and as Ben keeps vigil, he recalls his courtship with his first wife Elizabeth. Guest Stars: Geraldine Brooks and Torin Thatcher

Season Three

#67 "The Smiler" Hoss comes to the defense of Widow McClure who is being harassed by Arthur Bolling. During the scuffle, Arthur Bolling's gun goes off and he accidentally kills himself. At the funeral, Arthur's brother comes in search of his brother's killer. Guest Stars: Hershel Bernardi and Scatman Crothers Betty Endicott...(uncredited; extra as saloon girl)

#68 "Springtime" It's spring and the boys are irritable after a long, rough, hard winter. Another dispute lands the three of them in a mud wrestling match and Ben's visiting friend Jedidiah Milbank is injured in the ruckus. Ben offers to have his sons take care of Milbank's affairs while he recovers. Adam, Hoss and Joe set off in different directions to carry out the tasks assigned to them. #69 "The Honor Of Cochise" The Cartwrights come to the defense of Army Captain Moss Johnson who is running from an Apache attack. Guest Stars: Jeff Morrow and Deforest Kelley

#70 "The Lonely House" Joe stops to visit the Widow Bolden, but his visit is interrupted when a wounded man arrives. Joe realizes the man wanted for bank robbery is named Trock. He is unsure whether he should tell Mrs. Bolden and things grow more complicated when she falls in love with the man while tending him. Guest Stars: Paul Richards and Faith Domergue

#71 "The Burma Rarity" Two con artists visit Virginia City. Their first two victims are a former circus performer and owner of the local boarding house, Clementine Hawkins. Clementine is sweet on Ben Cartwright. When Ben calls on her, he finds that she has purchased a gem from the outlaws. Ben, thinking she has a fake, tries to switch the gems. Guest Stars:Beatrice Kay and Wally Brown

#72 "Broken Ballad" Gunfighter Ed Payson returns to Virginia City after his father dies to claim his father's place. He isn't welcomed with open arms -- especially by Will Cass, a local storeowner whose son Dave was killed by Payson in a gunfight. Adams befriends Payson after seeing the cold reception he receives. As their friendship develops, Adam learns that Payson has given up his gun and wants to live peacefully now. Adam decides to help but this proves difficult when Cass uses everything in his power to try and run Payson out of town. Guest Stars: Robert Culp

#73 "The Many Faces Of Gideon Flinch" Gideon Flinch and his niece Jennifer check into the hotel with Flinch using the alias Homer T. Cranston. He is a meek man and hopes to elude a man named Bullethead Burke who lost $5,000 on advice from Flinch. When Jennifer finds out what her uncle is up to, she comes up with a plan to trick Hoss into posing as her uncle. Guest Stars: Ian Wolfe, Arnold Stang, and Sue Ane Langdon
Date: November 5, 1961

#74 "The Friendship" The Cartwrights have prisoners working on the ranch, putting down rail ties. Joe is saved by Danny Kidd, a young man who was orphaned very young and in the prison system most of his life. Joe offers to repay him and when kid says he wants his freedom, Joe manages to get it for him. Now he must help Danny cope with life on the outside. Guest Stars: Dean Jones

#75 "The Countess" The Ponderosa is visited by an old friend who is now Lady Linda Chadwick. Twenty years ago she and Ben were in love and the widowed Chadwick tries to rekindle the flames. When Ben doesn't appear to have any interest in her, she decides to use her wealth and influence to break him so he will have to turn to her for help. Guest Stars: Margaret Hayes and John Anderson

#76 "The Horse Breaker" Ponderosa horse-breaker Johnny Lightly is paralyzed in a fall from a horse and is moved to the house to begin his therapy with doctor's assistant Ann Davis. Johnny likes Ann, but due to a past experience, she does not respond to his attention. After Ben's sons leave on a cattle drive, Ben is confronted by a man with a grudge. Date: November 26, 1961

#77 "Day Of The Dragon" Joe accepts a bet during a poker game, not realizing the ante is a Chinese slave girl named Su Ling. Joe brings her to the Ponderosa and when she refuses to be set free, Joe turns his problem over to Pa. No one is aware that Su Ling belongs to General Tsung who will do anything to get her back. Guest Stars: Lisa Lu, Richard Loo and Philip Ahn
Date:December 3, 1961

#78 "The Frenchman" A man comes to town with his sister and claims to be the reincarnation of French poet Francois Villon. When his irritating' behavior gets him kicked out of the local hotel, Joe and Hoss bring them to the Ponderosa. Joe falls for Francois' sister Eloise and his relationship with her may be the only way of keeping her brother from dueling with Hoss. Guest Stars: Andre Phillips and Erika Peters

#79 "The Tin Badge" While in the town of Rubicon, Joe is set up to win a fight and then offered the job of Sheriff. Joe tells his family about the offer and becomes angry when his brother refuses to take him seriously He decides to accept the job. Guest Stars: Vic Morrow and Karen Steele

#80 "Gabrielle" Joe and Hoss come upon an accident and find a couple dead. The couple's blind eleven year old daughter survives. Guest Stars: Diane Mountford and John Abbott

#81 "Land Grab" Ben plays host to an old friend and ex-Army officer named Bragg. What Ben doesn't know is that Bragg is posed as John Polk and has sold Ponderosa land to settlers who now show up to claim it. Guest Stars: John McGiver and George Mitchell
Date: December 31, 1961

#82 "The Tall Stranger" Hoss is in love with Margie Owens and is about to propose when Mark Connors comes to town and fills her head with tales of adventure. Margie falls in love with Mark and they are married. After the wedding, the two leave town and Hoss tries to get on with his life. Some time later he is summoned to Carson City where Margie is alone and about to have a baby. Guest Stars: Kathie Browne and Sean McClory

#83 "The Lady From Baltimore" The Ponderosa is visited by the wife and daughter of Ben's old friend Horace Banning. Deborah Banning has a plan to have her daughter Melinda marry a Cartwright and escape poverty. She poses as a woman of wealth and Joe falls in love with Melinda as planned. The problem is Melinda doesn't love Joe-she loves Adam. Guest Stars: Mercedes McCambridge

Adam tries to help both Laura and Peggy deal with their loss, insisting that Laura tell Peggy the truth about her father. Meanwhile, Ben has been cared for by Mr. Dorman who takes him home to wait for his sons´ return. Joe is bushwhacked on the way home and the package from Adam is stolen. The letter from Adam states he is sending home a valuable ruby he bought for $1,000. Little Joe hides the theft from his father to keep Pa from asking too many questions about his poker-playing and late night activities. Little Joe enters Hoss in the flapjack contest and bets against the opponent in an attempt to win $1,000 to pay Adam for the ruby. Hoss takes them home so Mr. Conrad can recuperate. While at the Ponderosa, Kelly meets Paul Mandel, a former ballet dancer, who helps her achieve her dream of being a ballerina. #187 "The Flannel-Mouth Gun" The cattlemen hire a range detective named Simmons to investigate the rash of cattle thefts that have occurred. When the small ranchers are scared into selling their ranches for less than they are worth and one of the ranchers wives is killed, Adam investigates to find out who is behind all the trouble. #188 "Ponderosa Birdman" In this comic episode, Hoss becomes involved with Professor Klump. The Professor is working on an experiment which he believes will make men able to fly. #192 "Right Is the Fourth R" Adam takes over for an injured school teacher named Barbara. He plans to have the children study the early history of the Nevada territory. #193 "Hound Dog" Cousin Muley Jones visits again and this time he comes with a pack of hound dogs. The dogs cause sleepless nights and chaos. Hoss and Muley decide to train the dogs to hunt coyotes plaguing the herd. The dogs don´t take to hunting wolves and when their real owner Tracy shows up, she is furious that they have ruined her bird dogs. #194 "The Trap" Joe´s old girlfriend Hallie Shannon thinks Joe killed her husband so they could be together. Joe vehemently denies this. Shannon´s husband´s twin brother believes it too. Hoss´ belief in the young man turns out to be well founded when patch finally overcomes his own fears to save Hoss from a desperate situation.
